Old God of the Mountain
old god of the mountain
gazes at the sky
bright sun warms him
he closes his eyes and dreams
old god of the mountain
gazes at the stars
night winds cool him
he closes his eyes and dreams
what are you dreaming old god? say i
i dream of rivers and trees
of beasts and fishes and seas
i dream the wind their music
i dream their lives the words
old god of the mountain
wakes and sleeps again
i walk the paths within him
i join him in his dreams
he dreams a river flowing
dark silence in its wake
stars gleam upon the water
bright jewels on satin cape
from deep a woman rises
drops glisten on her skin
she wraps the cape about her
the mystery presses in
old god of the mountain
face turned toward the sun
dreams of fields and forests green
where fire-crowned lions run
old god of the mountain
bright rainbow paints the sky
soft mists caress his fevered brow
two hawks nest in his eyes
old god of the mountain
gazes at the moon
he dreams of fishes leaping
the warbling of the loons
old god sleeps and wakes again
the mythic wind doth blow
a wingéd hoof cleaves silent stone
life’s blesséd spring here flows
old god of the mountain
sweet tears fall from his eyes
for back at him there gazes
the mirror of the sky
gazes at the sky
bright sun warms him
he closes his eyes and dreams
old god of the mountain
gazes at the stars
night winds cool him
he closes his eyes and dreams
